Supporting Our Schools: Ways to Get Involved

Strong public schools are the foundation of a vibrant, connected community. Whether you currently have children enrolled in Brevard Public Schools, are a parent looking ahead to the future, or are a local business owner, the success of our educational system touches all of us. Here in Viera and throughout Brevard County, there are countless meaningful ways to lend a hand, share your resources, and make a lasting impact on our students and educators.

Join a PTA or PTO

One of the most direct ways parents and families can support their local school is by getting involved with its Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) or Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO). These organizations help support school activities, teachers, students, and families while creating opportunities for parents and community members to become more involved in school life. Even if you cannot commit to attending every meeting or volunteering at every event, PTOs and PTAs often have individual events, committees, fundraisers, and one-time volunteer opportunities where an extra set of hands can make a difference.

For Viera families, consider connecting with your child’s school to learn more about its parent organization and how you can participate.

Businesses Becoming a Partner in Education

Beyond individual involvement, local businesses have a unique opportunity to support schools through Brevard Public School’s Partners in Education (PIE) program. PIE connects schools with businesses, organizations, and civic groups to create meaningful partnerships that benefit students, educators, schools and the broader community. The program is designed to match the needs of schools with the resources and expertise available within the community.

That support can take many forms, from providing resources or services to supporting school programs, sharing professional expertise, sponsoring initiatives, or creating opportunities that connect students with the local business community. Brevard Public Schools recently kicked off the 2026–27 PIE year with more than 60 business partners and 100 school-based PIE coordinators representing every school in the district. Businesses, organizations, and civic groups interested in participating can start by reaching out directly to the PIE coordinator at the school they would like to support.

Support the Brevard Schools Foundation

When tax dollars stop, the Brevard Schools Foundation steps in to fill the educational funding gaps for over 70,000 students and 4,800 teachers across our 86 public schools. They manage incredible initiatives that you can support financially, including:

  • Supply Zone for Teachers: A free resource center where teachers can “shop” for needed materials to give to students who might otherwise go without.
  • Take Stock in Children: A mentorship and scholarship program designed to assist motivated, low-income middle and high school students.
  • “Bright Ideas” Grants: Community donations help fund these mini-grants, allowing BPS teachers to bring innovative, special projects to life in their classrooms.

Donate More Than School Supplies

Many schools in our area maintain discreet food pantries, hygiene closets, or uniform donation banks for students in need. Beyond giving to the Foundation’s Supply Zone, you can check directly with your local school’s front office or guidance counselor to see what specific items they are running low on. Donating gently clothes, non-perishable snacks, or hygiene products is a tangible way to ensure every student is ready to learn.

For those who want to make a larger community impact, businesses, HOAs, churches, civic groups, youth organizations, sports teams, and other community groups can even host their own school or hygiene supply drive through the Brevard Schools Foundation. There is no minimum size requirement to participate.

Volunteer Your Time

Sometimes, the most valuable thing you can give is your time. Whether it’s reading to students, helping out in the media center, or chaperoning a field trip, our schools are always looking for reliable volunteers. However, it is important to know that before you can volunteer, Brevard Public Schools requires volunteers to complete the district’s volunteer registration process and fingerprinting/background screening. Fingerprinting is conducted right here in Viera at the BPS Educational Services Facility (Office of District and School Security).

A helpful tip for locals: According to the Brevard Public Schools Volunteer Information, the standard $35.00 fingerprinting fee is currently waived for BPS volunteers until further notice! Since approval can take time, it is a good idea to complete the process well before you plan to volunteer.

Every classroom, teacher and student has different needs and sometimes the most meaningful support is simply being willing to listen and help. When neighbors, families, businesses, and community organizations come together to support our schools, the entire community benefits. Our schools are part of what makes Viera and Brevard County a great place to call home.

Getting started is easy. Pick one avenue that fits your schedule or business goals and reach out to a local school today. When we support our schools, we are truly investing in the heart of our community.
