Bringing Thanksgiving to Every Table: The Impact of Space Coast Basket Brigade
The Space Coast Basket Brigade is on a mission to make a difference as a community, for the community. Founded in 2009 with a single-family delivering just four baskets, the Brigade has grown immensely over the years, aiming to deliver 3,500 baskets this Thanksgiving season. The nonprofit has created a space where anyone, regardless of age or financial situation, can contribute to make a difference in Brevard County.
EmilyAnne Thomason, the owner of Glass Doctor Brevard, shared with us how the impact of the Basket Brigade is profoundly felt by the families it serves. She recalled moments when families were overwhelmed with gratitude, and came forward with tears in their eyes, grateful to receive a complete Thanksgiving meal during difficult times. Having experienced financial uncertainty herself, EmilyAnne describes these instances as “full circle moments,” reminding her of the importance of community support.
Each year, EmilyAnne’s whole family joins the effort, including her youngest, who at five years old, now associates turkeys with giving back. This sense of community involvement is what the Basket Brigade strives to cultivate, inviting people of all ages to come together and make a difference.
For those interested in contributing, there are several ways to get involved. Donations of food items and gift cards, volunteering your time, hosting food drives, or participating in events are all ways to support the Brigade. This year, Space Coast Basket Brigade’s main packing event will take place on November 22nd at the Viera Regional Community Center.
On Saturday, November 23rd, Space Coast Basket Brigade will be hosting a family-friendly “Strut Your Turkey Stuff 3k” with all proceeds going towards providing holiday meals and year-round support for families in need within Brevard County.
